Wrestling announces 2022-23 schedule and ticket plans
BOONE, North Carolina — Featuring non-conference duels against four ACC programs, including two that will be contested at Varsity Gym, plus Boone visits from SoCon counterparts such as Chattanooga and Campbell, App State Wrestling unveiled an impressive 2022-23 schedule on Wednesday.
After a 9-2 season that featured an undefeated run to a SoCon regular season title and a top 30 finish at the NCAA Championships, the head coach John Mark Bentley returns eight wrestlers who have successfully started in the 10-man roster. That includes the return of a two-time All-American in Jon Jon Millner and five other wrestlers who qualified for the NCAA or placed in the top 33 in their weight class.
A schedule with nine home dates at Varsity Gym and another SoCon Championship appearance at Boone’s Holmes Convocation Center culminates with the NCAA Championships in Tulsa, Okla. FloWrestling gave App State a preseason tournament ranking of No. 21 in the nation.
The non-conference portion of the schedule includes a Jan. 13 trip to Boone from Virginia Tech, which was No. 8 in the last NWCA poll of 2021-22, and a Jan. 24 visit from Duke. App State opens the season with a Nov. 4 road duel at NC State, which was No. 4 in the NWCA final poll, and makes a Dec. 15 trip to North Carolina, which finished the regular season at No. 23. Binghamton, which had four NCAA qualifiers last season, is also coming to Boone.
Among App State’s eight SoCon matchups, the Mountaineers will host Bellarmine (Dec. 20, in a doubleheader also involving Queens), Chattanooga (Sunday, Feb. 5), a Senior Day doubleheader against Presbyterian and Davidson (Sunday, Feb. february). ) and Campbell (at a date yet to be determined). The playoffs begin March 4 with another date Saturday for the SoCon Championships.

It should be noted that after App State’s trip to Campbell in 2020 and 2021, the Camels are making back-to-back visits to Varsity Gym, as the Mountaineers won 19-13 in their 2022 duel at Boone.
There are six tournaments on App State’s 2022-23 schedule, including an appearance at the Cliff Keen Invitational in Las Vegas, to accompany regular events such as the Mountaineer Invitational (November 12 in Boone) and the Appalachian Open ( January 28). at Boone).
In addition to Millner, returns Caleb Smith, Sean Carter, Will Formato and Cody Bond have qualified for NCAA championships during their careers. Heath Gonyer was in the top 33 last year, while Mason Fiscella and Wyatt Miller started full-time for the Mountaineers.
