Ideas about business and economics: better ways to teach through online videos and animated illustrations and graphics
“We accepted the books when they were presented. We should now accept electronically recorded lessons, as they are even better than books. “
The teaching began orally. Then came writing and reading. Teaching just got easier. This was followed by books written by experts.
All the while, we have depended on the teachers. They guide the students, explain, question and answer.
But today we have the technology for recording and playback. The teaching of the best teachers can be recorded and played over and over – the whole lesson or parts of it. These can be displayed on the screen or on the wall for the whole class to see. Graphics and diagrams can be displayed. The class teacher can guide the students, stop the video, rewind it and listen to the teaching of the expert teacher. The entire lesson can be shown over and over.
Graphics and illustrations are explained by the expert teacher. Illustrations can be graphic and animated. The image may be exploded (enlarged) to show the parts and how they are put together to form the whole product. The class teacher does not need to answer questions or explain the entire lesson.
With a good teacher videotaping lessons with illustrations and animations, all students in all schools across the country will have the benefit of being taught by the same teacher.
These types of instructions are already available on our computers. You can learn anything that interests you. You can learn to cook anything you like – Malaysian, Chinese, Italian, Indian or Western recipes. You can produce woodcarvings, assemble an engine and take it apart, build a house, a plane or a drone… and so on. You can learn any language, hear the correct pronunciation, and listen to video characters talking and even answer questions. Registration can be interactive. Like textbooks, lessons will be prepared by the best teachers and every student will benefit.
It’s time we switched to recorded video lessons produced by the best teachers in the country and abroad (for English language and science and math in English).
Teachers in classrooms would still be needed. But their job is to guide the students as they follow the lessons on the screen. This removes the current problem of different teachers with varying skills. In fact, as the teacher guides his students, he learns more.
Problems encountered or the reaction of students can be noted by the class teacher and forwarded to the expert teacher. Improvements or corrections can be made. And any corrections can be put into the lessons for the whole country to benefit.
As with the YouTube app, the particular topic can be accessed by typing in the desired word. It would be simple to search for anything the class wants to know. You don’t have to search a library. All you have to do is type the word.
This system is particularly useful for language teaching. For English, it is no longer necessary to find good teachers. The English course is now available. You can learn English by taking the course. However, I have to admit that reading books is still very important in learning the English language. The more books you read, the more you will master the way English is spoken. It is not a question of stringing the words together correctly. It is about knowing the sentences used by English speakers.
So instead of saying “It’s raining a lot”, the English would say: “It’s raining cats and dogs”. The time is expressed by saying: “Much water has flowed under the bridge”.
While reading novels, you will come across these phrases. You don’t have to memorize them. If you read a lot, you will often come across the correct sentences as you read. And you will remember them because you know them.
We need to change the way we teach. New technology will make teaching and learning much easier. I hope Malaysia will think about this idea.
Remember the manuals. They are written by the best teachers. They help teachers understand and teach. Electronically recorded lessons prepared by the best teachers are even better than books.
We accepted the books when they were introduced. We should now accept electronically recorded lessons as they are even better than books.
In fact, most of them have been somewhat “imposed” on us because of the pandemic. It has, to a certain extent, propelled us towards a modern and contemporary way of teaching.
All we need to do is explore and update our methods and keep abreast of rapidly changing technology.
