Huge discount supermarket opens on former Poundland site in Yardley offering half-price purchases
Shoppers will be able to purchase the same food and household items found in large supermarkets for half the usual price at a new discount store to open in Birmingham next month.
Company Shop South Yardley is scheduled to open at the old Poundland site in Coventry Road on Thursday 2 December.
Considered a “redistribution supermarket,” Company Shop buys excess products from large retailers like M&S, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco that would otherwise have gone to waste – and sells them on average at 50% of the retail price.

With a store area of over 9,000 square feet, the huge new store will have aisles filled with the same products as “normal” supermarkets – including meat, vegetables and dairy – as well as a range of household products.
All of the items are perfectly good to eat or use, bosses say, but have become “overages” for a number of reasons, including incorrect or wobbly labeling, seasonal packaging, or overstock.
Homeowners hope the sharply reduced prices will help stretch family budgets, while supporting the industry and simultaneously preventing good food and household items from going unnecessarily wasted.
And with consumers and retailers more focused than ever on reducing unnecessary waste – as world leaders gather for COP26 – the store hopes to continue the good work of its Dudley branch, which has avoided the waste of more than 500 tons of perfectly good food in its first three months.
Beki Pratt, Director of Human Resources and Retail, Company Shop Group, said: “Following the success of Company Shop Dudley, we are delighted to open a new store in South Yardley and demonstrate our commitment to the region. .
“With about a month until the doors open, we really encourage anyone eligible for membership to sign up as soon as they can, in order to take advantage of our great deals when the doors open.
“Company Shop offers high quality food and products at around 50% of the normal retail price, which helps stretch the budgets of families in the area, while protecting the environment by reducing unnecessary waste.
“We look forward to welcoming new members to our South Yardley store. “
Members shopping at Company Shop Dudley have collectively saved over £ 1million on their shopping bills in the first three months since opening, with the same benefits expected for the South Yardley store.
The new store marks the group’s expansion into the region, after opening a store in Castle Mill in March – the first of its kind in the West Midlands.
Company Shop encourages eligible individuals and families to purchase a free membership card online before the store opens so that they can immediately take advantage of in-store offers.
Membership is open to anyone working in the NHS, social services, emergency services, the FMCG supply chain, the UK Armed Forces, charities and prison services, as well as those benefiting from means-tested allowances, including families with children receiving free school meals.
