Matthew Morgan, 22, started his writing business two years ago when he was a first-year media production student at Liverpool John Moores University in England.
Morgan wanted a more creative way to cover her college living expenses. Before starting his marketing activity in February 2020, Morgan worked as a delivery person for Deliveroo.
He spent three months and $500 of his interest-free student overdraft learning the basics of copywriting and buying email scraping software that would help him find clients.
In April 2020, he landed his first client. Around this time, he began posting videos on YouTube about his journey and sharing the information he learned. He has now amassed 10,000 Youtube subscribers.
In May 2020, he also started posting videos about his fledgling editorial business on TikTok and now has 461,000 followers on the platform.
Morgan created a paid virtual course in July 2020, teaching people copywriting skills and how to generate high-quality leads. The course has over 40 lessons on writing and costs $540.
In June, after completing the second year of her degree, Morgan took a break from college to work full-time on her marketing business.
He’s made $101,000 in revenue since he started his writing business from the multiple streams of income he’s created for himself, including his YouTube, TikTok, writing services, online courses, and PDF guides. His earnings have been verified by Insider.
Here are Morgan’s tips for pursuing a career in digital marketing.
Learn a digital marketing skill and dive into the industry
Morgan began his career in digital marketing as a copywriter.
After watching a YouTube video that explained what copywriting is and how to make money from it, Morgan spent six weeks learning about the industry.
Morgan’s advice for learning a new digital skill is to immerse yourself in the online community. “I watched countless videos and courses trying to learn everything I could about the world of persuasive writing,” he said.
Once you understand the industry and the different ways to generate income from copywriting, focus on one and start practicing, Morgan advised.
He suggested starting by writing about things that interest you from a sales perspective.
Morgan practiced writing newsletters, advertisements and sales proposals until he felt confident enough in his new skills to start approaching clients.
“Even if you never publish the emails, you’ll learn how to structure your writing, pitch different types of products, and have a huge portfolio of work to show business owners when you decide to start pitching. people,” Morgan said.
Get comfortable to quickly introduce yourself and your services
When Morgan started out, he struggled to sell himself and his services as worth his prices. He started by reaching out to small business owners via email and phone.
“You will face daily rejection or be ignored by the companies you contact. Depending on how you react to this, it will make or break you as an entrepreneur,” he said.
Morgan followed the “fail fast” method, in which he set goals to achieve a goal and executed them as quickly as possible. If they don’t work immediately, he would switch to a different approach.
“Too many people spend months or years researching a business when they just need to get started,” Morgan said.
From those early rejections, Morgan quickly realized that having an online portfolio or website where clients can easily view your work to research leads was essential.
“Create a portfolio, even if it’s just a practice job,” Morgan said. He suggested recording a sales pitch video using Loom, a free video recording platform, and then creating the corresponding slides on Google Slides. The presentation slides and video can be downloaded from Carrd.co, a website where you can create a free landing page.
Your page should also include a place where customers can book a call with you, Morgan added.
Build your personal brand on social media to market your services and generate passive income
With 20,000 subscribers and subscribers on YouTube and Instagram and 4.1 million likes on TikTok, Morgan said a large social media presence can passively market your services to potential clients.
“I made videos every day, analyzing how other successful creators in the writing space had built their audiences,” Morgan said. He referenced Ben Settle, a successful copywriter, as a key influence.
Morgan said freelance work has income drops, so it was important to create digital products like online courses and instructional PDFs that sold more consistently and generated passive income alongside her client work.
He said having a large following on social media in the writing field meant there was a market for these products.
Morgan added that setting up these resources “takes a lot of work, but it pays off in passive income in the long run.”
When it comes to managing multiple workflows, Morgan suggested using blocks of time by working on singular clients at specific times.
“I use a production line on notion.so to organize things, so Monday, for example, I can shoot all my client videos, then Tuesday can be an editing day, Wednesday of publication”, said the young entrepreneur.
