1980 World Series Champions Reunion for the Phillies
Baseball legends from the Phillies’ first team to win a World Series gather for Toyota Phillies Alumni Weekend, Aug. 4-7, at Citizens Bank Park for the series against the Washington Nationals.
To celebrate their comeback, the Phillies and Toyota are hosting a full range of fan events including on-field ceremonies, special guests, commemorative gifts such as a replica of World Champions Coca-Cola Mike’s ring Schmidt 1980 and more as part of the team. salute to the champions of the 1980 World Series. Initial plans for a 40th anniversary celebration have been postponed due to the pandemic.
Festivities also include a pregame tribute in recognition of Dan Baker’s 50th anniversary behind the microphone as the Phillies’ public announcer, as well as the Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame induction ceremony for 1980s legends Bake. McBride and Ron Reed.
“It will be a very special weekend as we celebrate the legacy of this remarkable team,” Phillies managing partner and CEO John Middleton said. “In addition, we will bestow one of our highest honors on two 1980 teammates, Bake McBride and Ron Reed, as we induct them into our Toyota Phillies Wall of Fame. We will also recognize one of the greatest voices of Philadelphia, the legendary Dan Baker.
“Toyota dealers in the Tri-States are honored to be part of this celebration of the 1980 World Champion Phillies,” said Paul Muller, president of the local Tri-State Toyota Dealers Association. “It is a pleasure for Toyota to join the Phillies in saluting the 1980 World Series champions through the many exciting events taking place throughout the Toyota Phillies Alumni Weekend.”
More than 40 former players are scheduled to attend the festivities. In addition to the 1980 World Series champions and the Phillies Wall of Famers, former players from the 2008 World Series champion team and the 1983 and 1993 National League champions will participate in pre-game events. Additionally, an official Phillies publication highlighting the 1980 World Series champions will be available for the first time. The 64-page ($10) book, which includes a look back at the season through the eyes of Mike Schmidt, will be sold at the New Era Phillies Team Store, through stadium program vendors and at phillies.com/ shop.
Tickets for the Phillies Toyota Alumni Weekend are available at phillies.com. Fans are encouraged to arrive at the ballpark early for each event and follow the Phillies on social media for updates.
TOYOTA PHILLIES ALUMNI WEEKEND RANGE
Friday August 5 – Dan Baker 50th Birthday tribute before the 7:05 p.m. game that night
Saturday, August 6 – Phillies Toyota Wall of Fame induction ceremony of Bake McBride and Ron Reed, prior to the 6:05 p.m. game that night. All fans receive a commemorative print of the 2022 Wall of Fame inductees.
ABOUT BAKE McBRIDE: An outfielder for the Phillies from 1977 to 1981, McBride was a key member of the 1980 World Series champions who helped lead the club to four playoff appearances during his five years in Philadelphia. He hit .292 with 106 doubles, 32 triples, 44 home runs, 258 RBIs and 98 interceptions in 553 games for the Phillies. In the 1980 Fall Classic, he helped erase a 4-0 Game 1 deficit with a three-run homer and batted .304 over the series. McBride won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 1974 and was selected to the NL All-Star Team in 1976 before being traded to the Phillies in 1977. Overall, he batted .299 in 1,071 games in his 11 major league seasons.
ABOUT RON REED: A right-handed pitcher for the Phillies from 1976 to 1983, Reed ranks first among club relievers in all-time wins (54) and innings (763.0), second in strikeouts (519), third in games (449) and seventh in saves. (90). He was also ranked among the National League’s prospect leaders in each of those categories during his tenure at the Phillies. Reed posted a 2.49 ERA from 1976 to 1978 and recorded over 100.0 relief innings in each of those seasons, helping the club win three consecutive NL East titles. He also appeared in 21 postseason games with Philadelphia across a Division Series, five League Championship Series and two World Series, and posted a 1.69 ERA in the Fall Classic. Another highlight: Reed spent two seasons (1965-67) in the NBA before beginning his 19-year career in Major League Baseball.
